At Monarch Family Dental of Westminster, our team offers a range of solutions for adult crown restorations. There are many different types of crowns we provide for our patients, each of which is designed to fit over your natural teeth.

Why Adults Might Need a Dental Crown

Dental Crown Restorations are usually recommended for the following situations:

  • Cavities
  • Cracked teeth
  • To fix a failed crown
  • To replace a worn-down filling
  • Following root canal treatments

Crowns can provide damaged teeth with a much greater level of protection than a filling, particularly if your fillings have started to break down or become loose over time.

Which type of crown restoration is best?

There are three different types of dental crowns, including

In the past, gold crowns were considered the longest lasting of all materials. While not aesthetically pleasing for everyone, gold is actually the most similar to the natural structure of your teeth, both in the way that it contracts and expands, along with its hardness. Gold crown restorations are tough, they will not tarnish, and they will not erode or wear down your other teeth in any way. Another advantage is that they also require less of the natural tooth to be removed and is a great solution for the back teeth in the mouth; this is partly due to its robustness but also because it is not as visible in the back of the mouth.

Despite this being one of the strongest materials for adult crowns, the color of the crown means that it will not be suitable for placement anywhere in the frontal parts of a person’s mouth.

For anyone who is seeking the most natural-looking adult crown, ceramics are a great choice. These crowns are lighter, and they’re made with slightly thinner materials that are renowned for being gentle to a person’s natural gum tissues.

We offer ceramic crowns made out of Zirconia. These crowns have the aesthetic of natural tooth color, while still being strong enough to be placed on the back teeth.

Porcelain Fused to Metal:

This type of restorative crown is typically prepared with a metallic shell, and a porcelain veneer will then be fused onto this shell. This process will give the crown a natural-looking appearance that is similar to ceramic but has the added benefit of the strength of the metal underneath. When we consider the combined success rate of restorative crowns and their strength, this actually outperforms the gold crown option.

One of the biggest drawbacks to this option is that it requires a lot more of the structure of the tooth to be removed. As such, it can lead to the gums becoming more vulnerable to inflammation, and it may also result in the wearing down of any nearby teeth.

What is a crown restoration?

An adult crown restoration is the process of getting a dental crown placed over an existing tooth that is damaged. The crown restoration process for adults will require a lab to custom-build a crown for the patient. Once the crown has been created, Dr. Jorge Rojas will remove the areas of damage, preparing the tooth for a new crown or cap placement.

What are the advantages of restoration?

The advantages of restoration are:

  • It can hold together a damaged or cracked tooth
  • It can restore a dental implant
  • It can give your teeth essential protection following a root canal treatment
  • It can replace worn-down or larger fillings more effectively
  • It can help improve or enhance the appearance of your teeth
  • It may help to reshape your teeth

Essentially, dental crowns can disguise a multitude of cosmetic flaws in your teeth, improve your oral health, and once in place, they last for a long time before needing any further attention from Dr. Rojas. With good care, they could last anything between 5-15 years, depending on the material used and the area of your mouth they are placed in.

How The Dental Crown Process Works

A restorative crown process can take place, in full, across two appointments.

  • During your initial visit to the office, a range of images and measurements will be taken.
  • As long as there is no infection present, Dr. Rojas will then reduce the size of the damaged tooth so that they can take a mold or impression of your mouth.
  • Once he has chosen the right type of crown for your specific situation, a crown will be ordered according to your individual measurements and aesthetic needs.
  • While your crown is being made, you might need to wear a temporary bridge or crown. As soon as your own crown is ready, the office will contact you to come to the practice to get it fitted by placing it over the tooth and fixing it into place with professional dental cement.
